Our 2021 Mama's Day Competition winner by Kiri Davis!
My design is centered around the Māori world view that wahine/women are a direct link to Papatūānuku/The Earth Mother, from which all life is created and nourished. That women are precious taonga to be treasured and should be treated as such.
Māori warriors carried the name of their mother or grandmother to elevate their mana/spiritual power and before colonisation, more Māori celebrated the mana of a women and particularly their īkura/menstruation. Reaching this milestone was a welcome into womanhood and never looked at as taboo, dirty or negative in any way. The legend goes that in the beginning of time, Tāne was brought to this world on the flow of blood from Papatūānuku into te ao mārama/the world of life and light. He realised the onewhero/red earth was the blood of Papatūānuku so he formed Hineahuone (she who is formed from earth) and breathed life into her through hongi. She became his wife and the very first human. We are one with nature and just as the moon regenerates every month, so does the whare tangata/womb.
Our ability to house and nourish a life inside our bodies meant women were to be protected spiritually and physically. Women's survival meant the survival of the iwi/tribe and therefore, the survival of humanity.
There is much to learn from the ways of old. I believe we would all get along much better if we learn to respect the mana each person holds. Each child, each man, and each woman alike.
